What makes Lord Howe Island unique?

Its beginnings, for one thing. The island is the eroded remnant of a large shield volcano that erupted seven million years ago. Now, its 875m-high mountains are covered in rainforest, home to plants related to Australian, New Caledonian and New Zealand species, but with around 50% of species unique.

Lord Howe Island harbours eighteen landbird species in its forests, including the rare native Woodhen. Fourteen species of seabirds breed around the shoreline, in colonies of tens of thousands. The marine life exhibits a fascinating blend of tropical and temperate sea creatures, and the island’s coral reef is the most southerly in the world.

Small wonder, then, that the island was given a World Heritage Listing in 1982 for its outstanding natural history.
